Racin’ for the weekend

Ed Evans

The Daily News
July 1st is a special day for Northwest drag racers. Back in the 70′s, the Kitimat Hill Climb on July 1st, was the only drag race for over a thousand miles. Racers built their rides for a one shot deal. One race, one day, maybe three time trials and at least one round of elimination was all she wrote for a winter of hard work. Four runs for bragging rights for the remainder of the year. Most of us never made a run up the hill, but it was a right of passage to work on and watch as the cars make runs up the paved Haisla hill. It was said “ I wish there were more races”.

Fast forward to the present. We now have five races in the region, Terrace has four and Houston has one weekend. This weekend, on the anniversary of the now defunct Kitimat hill climb, is your next opportunity to see how far the racing has come in the Northwest. Drag racing will be on Saturday June 30th and Sunday July 1st. Time Trials will begin at 10 a.m. daily. The Street Series will roll off Saturday at 6 p.m.

Kitimat also will be the location this weekend for the latest in the Show & Shine circuit with a Show & Shine July 1st at the Tamatik arena 2p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sandy

The Daily News

With the highway closed, no cars from Terrace coming down and the threatening skies, turnout for the Seafest Show & Shine was expected to be light. Saturday did dawn to a slight drizzle that continued throughout the day. The turnout, with the road closed, was just as large as any sunny Seafest. Thousands of people braved the elements to look at the assembled collection of Iron. With nobody to claim the “Long Distance” award this year, Prince Rupert cars filled the spots with 27 entrants. Several cars were making their first appearance, including John Brigleo and his 1964 Corvette, winning “ Best Engine”.

Sandy Menzies with his beautiful 1968 Camero took home the vote on Saturday, winning “People’s Choice”.

Puddle to the metal – Waiting in the rain

Friday, June 1st, 2007

By Ed Evans

The Daily News
The 2007 drag racing season started out the same way the 2006 season ended, with a rainout day. Saturday’s drag racing, including the Saturday evening “Street Series”, was canceled due to rain. actually, lets clarify that – the rain that fell was at times of biblical proportions. Tents were left sitting in 2 inches of water, as it left racers and their family’s sitting under awnings and looking out from motor homes andtrailers at the deluge. The few people that were lucky enough to miss the downpour at the airport, came back to report a veritable swimming pool at the Walmart. That said, Sunday opened up to overcast skies, as racers lined up to go through tech and to prepare for racing. The field of cars on Sunday was 50 including the Juniors. Even though the skies threatened and there were a few drops felt, a full day of racing was run. “King of the Hill” winner was Sheldon Wiebe of Terrace running his Twin Turboed 80′s Mustang and “King Junior” was Natasha Ray from Terrace in her Blossom powered Spitzer Junior Dragster. The “Gambler” Race was won by Janette Derksen of Burns Lake in her supercharged Camero, taking a redlight win from Prince Rupert’s Kham Shantz. If you are interested in helping the Auto Club with Seafest Show & Shine there will be a organizational meeting Monday June 4th at 7 p.m. at the special events office, on the fountain side of City Hall. Everybody is welcome. Next up: Show & Shine – The Seafest Parade and the Seafest Show & Shine – Saturday June 9th Racing – Terrace Drags June 30th and July 1st at the Terrace/Kitimat Airport For more information or to view more photo’s check out the websites www.terracedrags.ca or www.princerupertautoclub.com .
