Thats a Wrap

The final act of the 2009 Northwest drag racing season played out last weekend at the Terrace Regional airport.

Billed as a ‘Rain-out day’ to replace the June 27th race day that was rained-out and also to wrap up the year long points series.

Living up to it’s namesake, Saturday was ‘Rained-out’, as a torrential downpour set in over the countryside.

After spending Saturday under the tarps and awnings at various campsites around Terrace, (I have been told rupertites have the biggest tarps) racers emerged Sunday morning to bright sunny skies.

It was still a little chilly in the morning as time trials ran, making for a slightly slick track. The cooler denser air however made for more horsepower. As the morning went on the traction improved ten fold as heat built up in the track under the sunny skies.

In ‘Super Pro’, Terrace’s Chris Bie was prevented from making it a Hat trick ( he had won the last two races). Bie made it to the final four against Prince Rupert’s Aaron MacIntyre, who was running Paul Anderson’s Altered . MacIntyre was sunburned with a red light as Bie made it to the finals. Bie had used up all of his luck as he went down to Paul Soares. Bie however, did hold on to 1st place in the points series by beating Kitimat’s Paul Amado earlier on in the day.

The ‘Pro’ class had no fewer than 17 cars chasing points leader Ben Monroe from Kitimat. Monroe’s title went out the window when Kitimat’s Randy Baker running in his first race since May 24th ,took down Monroe’s Vega.

The finals pitted Baker against Ron Nuis and his beautiful 1930 Hudson. Both racers were not only racing for the weekend ‘Pro’ title but also the points series. Nuis outlasted Baker and took home both wins.

In ‘Bike/Sled’ class Kevin Enmark kept up the blistering win pace with another first place finish against his brother Shawn. The two sled brothers also took home first and second in the Points series, Shawn having jumped in the standings over four bikes that were no shows.

In ‘Junior Dragster’, two Kitimat racers lined up in the finals. Tanner Daum took home first place over Lou Ribeiro. Daum also had a solid lead in the points series over Ribeiro.

First ever Bike Wars was a huge success

‘Bike Wars’ ran last Saturday with great weather, great racing and lots of bikes. With the bike count almost totaling the car count, every kind of bike ran, from dirt bikes to full on drag bikes.

Harley-Davidson of Smithers, the major sponsor of the weekend, brought out it’s full sales team and looked like they brought the whole store down, as there was a tent full of great product to browse through. If you had a bike license you could even take one of the many bikes on display out for a test run.

On Saturday, bracket racing classes ran and the feature
bike Jeff Knowles and his Nitro Harley from Prince
George made runs.
Knowles made some large smoky burnouts. After a good
launch, the Top fuel Harley seemed to loose power at
the top end of the 1/8 mile track and ran some numbers
that it is capable of running in the ¼ mile.
Sunday, Knowles only made one pass and suffered an
explosion at the top end of the track, that forced him
to put the bike away. Knowles said he will come back
next year and make some 4 second passes.
Sunday was ' King of the YXT' and the much awaited
'Quick 8 for Bike's'. Racing everything from street
bikes to drag bikes to dirt bikes, the fastest two bikes
were Kitimat's Ian Berrissford and Prince Ruperts
Lloyd Etzerza.
The former rivals have not seen the track for a few
years. Etzerza not having climbed on his bike since
the Prince Rupert Auto Club's 2005 '150 foot challenge'.
Berrisford had also made his first runs in a few years,
when he ran his drag bike in the First Annual 'Dave
Saunders Memorial Hill Climb' in Kitimat, earlier this year.
Paired against each other in the quarterfinals Berrissford
put Etzerza on the trailer and went into the finals, where
he lost to John Safonoff, who outlasted all the rest to win
the first ever 'Quick 8 for bikes' .

points series race in June.
The year long points series will wrap up this weekend
with winners for each class.
Chris Bie is in first place in 'Super Pro' class putting
him 42 points in front of Paul Amado, in second place
in the standings with170 points. Amado and three
others have a chance to beat Bie for first place.
Ben Monroe holds down first place in the close 'Pro'
class at 198 points. Chasing him down this weekend
will be no less than 17 cars, all of whom could take
home the championship on Sunday.
This Saturday, September 5th, will be 'King of the YXT'
and 'Gamblers' and Sunday, September 6th will be the
