First ever Bike Wars was a huge success

‘Bike Wars’ ran last Saturday with great weather, great racing and lots of bikes. With the bike count almost totaling the car count, every kind of bike ran, from dirt bikes to full on drag bikes.

Harley-Davidson of Smithers, the major sponsor of the weekend, brought out it’s full sales team and looked like they brought the whole store down, as there was a tent full of great product to browse through. If you had a bike license you could even take one of the many bikes on display out for a test run.

On Saturday, bracket racing classes ran and the feature
bike Jeff Knowles and his Nitro Harley from Prince
George made runs.
Knowles made some large smoky burnouts. After a good
launch, the Top fuel Harley seemed to loose power at
the top end of the 1/8 mile track and ran some numbers
that it is capable of running in the ¼ mile.
Sunday, Knowles only made one pass and suffered an
explosion at the top end of the track, that forced him
to put the bike away. Knowles said he will come back
next year and make some 4 second passes.
Sunday was ' King of the YXT' and the much awaited
'Quick 8 for Bike's'. Racing everything from street
bikes to drag bikes to dirt bikes, the fastest two bikes
were Kitimat's Ian Berrissford and Prince Ruperts
Lloyd Etzerza.
The former rivals have not seen the track for a few
years. Etzerza not having climbed on his bike since
the Prince Rupert Auto Club's 2005 '150 foot challenge'.
Berrisford had also made his first runs in a few years,
when he ran his drag bike in the First Annual 'Dave
Saunders Memorial Hill Climb' in Kitimat, earlier this year.
Paired against each other in the quarterfinals Berrissford
put Etzerza on the trailer and went into the finals, where
he lost to John Safonoff, who outlasted all the rest to win
the first ever 'Quick 8 for bikes' .
