First race of the season overcomes weather

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Prince Rupert Daily News

Mother Nature somewhat behaved for the first drag race of the season.

The weather was overcast on Saturday for the first race of the 2010 Drag Racing season. The full time

trials were held and the first round of eliminations for ‘King of the YXT’ was run down before the

overcast skies released the moisture. The downpour did not develop but the light drizzle had the same

result with the race being called at 3:00.

Sunday opened to still overcast weather but there were lots of sunny breaks and no rain. The ‘King of

theYXT’ and ‘Gamblers’ races from Saturday were run off. Tony Demelo won ‘King of the YXT’ and Dana

Amado running her new ride, a slant six cylinder Dodge Dart, took home ‘Gamblers’.

After stopping for a quick lunch break, the TDRA crew then ran off the full Sunday slate. With the final

car running down the track at around 5 p.m.. It was even more amazing as the volunteer staff was

shorthanded. The great job was much appreciated by the sixty plus racers.

The track conditions were excellent all weekend with lots of airtime including several cars that never ran with their ‘wheels up’ before.

But it was only a small deer

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Prince Rupert Daily News

All the thrashing will come to an end, as the opening race of the 2010 Drag racing Season kicks off this weekend at the Terrace Regional Airport. Some rides are ready to go, others are close and still others will be waiting for the second race June 19th and 20th to trip the lights and make a run down the track.

Kham Shantz and Terry Frizzell will not make the cut for the first race, as motors and transmissions did not get back in time.

The season opener in 2009 saw 4 cars and fans make the long trek from Haida Gwaii. This year the plan was to bring 4 cars over again, but one car met a deer on the highway and will have to get some bodywork done. The deer are small but they still can do a lot of damage.

The deer was another in a long list of problems for Jason Murphy. Last year was the first race he was able to attend. Murphy seemed to have mechanical problems every year ,after testing out his car before the races. Maybe he shouldn’t test it so hard before he gets it over here.

There will still be a strong bunch of cars for this weekend as racing will start Saturday and Sunday for time trials at 9:15am. At 1:15 the First round of “Brackets” or “King of the YXT” eliminations will start.

Don’t miss out the racing at this first event of 2010. See you there Saturday or Sunday!

Kham Shantz and his 1927 roadster will return to the track this season

Prince Rupert Daily News

The 2010 Drag racing season is almost upon us, the first race is set for May 15th and 16th at the Terrace Regional Airport.

As you might expect, work is underway at quite a few shops around town. Kham Shantz and his Big Block 1927 Roadster will be making a return to the track this season, after taking last year off due to work commitments. Shantz has had the engine and transmission sent away for refreshing and work is continuing on bringing his chassis up to new NHRA specs.

Terry Frizzell’s Barbeque

Photo: Ed Evans

Terry Frizzell on the other hand, has his own problems. Frizzell thought that his engine was having some minor problems after the final race of 2009. As the 2010 season approached, the minor problem turned into a major engine rebuild. The old motor could not be saved, so Frizzell said “ No problem I’ll pull the motor out of the barbeque.”. Frizzell has a 1930 Model A front end with a barbeque attached to it. It just so happened that the barbeque had the perfect replacement engine in it. Frizzell has sent the two motors away and the shop will put together the best parts from both motors. Hopefully it will be ready for the season opener. It’s ironic that his front engined 1966 rail was known as “Double Trouble” when it was built. It originally had two 300 cubic inch sixes in it.

In other news, The Prince Rupert Auto Club’s Seafest weekend is promising to be bigger than ever, with plans being worked on for a judged Sound-off and a Burnout Contest. Both will be held Saturday June 12th as part of Seafest 2010. This doesn’t mean that the Show & Shine will hold a back seat. The ever popular Seafest Show & Shine will still run and it’s hoped that Prince Rupert’s 100th anniversary will bring some more cars to the Third ave. location.
